When Connie and I arrived at the hospital, Roberta was barely clinging to life. The doctors were having a difficult time stabilizing her blood pressure, so only time would tell if she’d survive the day. We were anxiously pacing the waiting room when Holden came in with an update.

“Alphonse is awake. He’s still not talking, but the doctor said he should make a full recovery.” He rubbed the stubble on his face. “I’ve never seen the little guy so despondent and depressed. I’m really worried about his mental health.”

“Is anyone with him now?” I asked.

“No, Jackson and I told him we’d check back later.”

“Maybe I should visit again?” I volunteered.

“I suppose it wouldn’t hurt. He’s under protection, so I’ll have to go with you.”

“Connie, will you let me know if there’s any change with Roberta?”

“Of course! Please tell Alphonse that I’m thinking of him.”

I nodded, let out a pent up breath, and followed Holden into the elevator. Roberta was on the second floor, Alphonse the sixth. He pushed the button and as soon as the elevator began to rise, he pulled me into his arms.

“How are you?” His lips pressed lightly against the top of my head.

“I can’t even begin to put into words what I’m feeling. My heart breaks for Alphonse. He only just found someone who appreciates him. And Roberta, she’s had such a horrible life and it was finally starting to turn around for her… How could Donovan have done such a horrid thing to them? Holden, that wasn’t just spite, what happened to them was the work of someone incredibly evil. Her forehead…”

“You didn’t honestly think that Donovan had a huge change of heart once he got away? He shot a man in front of you, Emily. Why would this surprise you?”

“I’m thankful that—for whatever reason—he never released that monster on me.” A deep shiver tore through my body.

“Me, too.” Once the elevator stopped, he pulled away and placed his hand on the small of my back. I was led down a short corridor where a uniformed guard sat at the end of the hall. He snapped to attention when he saw Holden.

“Sheriff Dautry. I wasn’t expecting to see you again so soon. Ma’am,” he tossed in my direction with a curt head nod.

“This is my wife, Emily. She’s a friend of Deputy Rivet and seeing her might cheer him up some. She won’t be long.”

“Yes, sir,” the officer said, slowly pushing the door open so I could enter.

“Aren’t you coming?” I quietly asked Holden.

He shook his head. “We’ve already visited. I’ll be right here if you need anything. You go.”

I nervously wrung my hands a few times before Holden gave my back an encouraging rub. I gave him a quick smile to let him know that it was okay and slowly made my way into the darkened room. The faint hum of an IV pump was the only sound I heard.

“Alphonse?” I softly called while inching closer to the hospital bed. He didn’t answer. With bated breath, I rounded the corner and found him staring at the far wall.
